Mexico NY is a city of about 5,044 people located in Oswego County, Upstate NY. Mexico was originally proposed as a county and was formed from a split off the town of Whitestown in 1792. Mexico county was however soon abandoned. In 1794 George Frederick William Augustus Scriba purchased a large piece of land which later became the village of Mexico. George Scriba was also responsible for opening roads which connect to what is now Constantia. Mexico was a flourishing town and village comprising a large diversity of businesses such as oil-mills, saw mills, coopers, asheries, tanneries, gristmills, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, cheese plants, cloth-dressings, distilleries, shoe-shops, hotels, general merchandise, and jewelers.
In 1835 citizens of Mexico signed petitions and sent them to Washington requesting for the abolition of slavery. Two prominent members of the community, Asa Wing and Starr Clark did much to advance the movement. Asa Wing traveled the country urging voters to pressure their representatives to pass laws prohibiting ownership of slaves. Starr Clark was the leader of the underground railroad in this area.
